Chlorine Dioxide

A powerful oxidising agent and disinfectant across various applications, including municipal water treatment, food processing, healthcare settings, and industrial processes. Unlike chlorine, it operates by disrupting cellular processes through oxidation rather than chlorination, maintaining effectiveness across a wide pH range (4-10) and in the presence of organic matter, while producing fewer harmful byproducts. Safe generation is critical because ClO₂ is unstable during transport and hazardous therefore necessitating a safe on-site production through methods like acid-chlorite reactions, chlorate-peroxide processes, or electrochemical generation systems under controlled conditions.

Ultraviolet Disinfection (POU or Ring Main)

Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is a chemical-free method that uses UV-C light (wavelength 100-280 nm) to render microorganisms harmless by damaging their DNA and RNA, preventing reproduction. Widely applied in water treatment, air purification, surface disinfection, and medical equipment sterilization, it offers advantages including effectiveness against diverse pathogens, rapid treatment times, and minimal maintenance requirements. However, limitations exist: no residual protective effect, decreased efficacy in turbid media or at distance from the UV source, and potential safety hazards to human skin and eyes.

Heat Sanitisation (CIP only)

Thermal sanitisation provides a robust and chemical-free approach to disinfection, particularly effective in Clean-in-Place (CIP) systems where high temperatures can be safely maintained and monitored. This method operates by exposing surfaces to elevated temperatures for specified time periods to achieve microbial inactivation. The effectiveness depends on precise temperature control, adequate exposure time, and proper system design to ensure uniform heat distribution. While energy-intensive, heat sanitisation offers advantages including no chemical residues, consistent performance across varying water qualities, and simplified validation processes. However, careful consideration must be given to material compatibility, energy efficiency, and safety systems to prevent scalding risks.

Chemical Addition (CIP / Storage and Pipework)

Chemical addition systems provide flexible and controlled disinfection solutions for both CIP operations and ongoing treatment of storage tanks and distribution pipework. The systems dose chemical agents varying from disinfection solutions, to cooling and steam treatment chemicals to pre-treatment chemicals for membrane filtration. The effectiveness relies on accurate chemical dosing, proper mixing, and verified contact times while considering factors such as temperature, pH, location for injection, process flow and pressure.
